(It happens. I swear)
Of course, a lot of it has to do with the subject.
(And, on this, you will agree with me, some authors are big fans of the
depressing stuff). It’s hardly possible to cry when good things are happening
in the book. (I think). Some books you know you’re going to cry when you read
the blurb in the back. And, yet, others catch you by surprise.
This is my list of sob-worthy books. (Meaning that,
while reading these books, I cried so hard makeup was gone, and there was a
puddle in the floor)
- The Fault in our Stars, John Green. I should have known. Really, I should have. Cancer patients. And yet I’d heard so much about this book, I’d decided to risk it. And I’m glad I did. It’s a wonderful book that lulls you into a false sense of security and then…rips your heart out. Oh, how I love it.
- The Book Thief, Markus Zusak. This one is harder to judge. It’s set during the Holocaust, so you kind of expect it to be sad and depressing, but it’s just brilliant, and sweet, and so, so heartwarming, and then…the bottom drops out in a way you won’t see coming and you cry and you cry and you cry. And then you put the book down and cry some more.
- Harry Potter, J.K Rowling. That’s cheating, you say! Which book? And, yes, maybe it’s cheating, because I’m pretty sure I cried like a baby during Book 5 (WHY, SIRIUS, WHY?), Book 6 (WHY, DUMBLEDORE, WHY?), Book 7, (WHY LUPIN, WHY WHY WHY?). It’s a wonder I had any tears left to cry in some others book after this series. (The worst part, honestly, was when it ENDED. That made me want to cry some more)
- The Time Traveler’s Wife, Audrey Niffenegger. You cried, right? Don’t try to deny it. EVERYONE cried. It was a little nice love story, and then it wasn’t, and then it made no sense whatsoever, but you didn’t care, because you were too busy, you know …crying.
- The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini. This is one of my favorite books ever. Maybe because it breaks my heart in so many little pieces, and then it tries to put them back together but never quite manages it. It will make you sob (if you have a heart, of course), and then you will dry your tears and think you’re okay, but you’re not, not really…this book never truly leaves you.
There are a lot more. (Okay, I ADMIT IT, I CRY A LOT),
but these are the ones that first came to my mind. What about you? Any
tear-jerkers to recommend?
